The adjacent research park, the UMBBioPark (www.umbbiopark.umaryland.edu) is a key facility for location of bioscience companies who wish to collaborate with UMB faculty. UM: (University of Maryland, www.umd.edu): Located at College Park, the flagship institution offers a Biotech Research and Education Program (www.biotech.umd.edu) that has provided contract services in bioprocessing, manufacturing and education to biotech companies for 20 years. The Maryland Industrial Partnerships program (www.mips.umd.edu) funds joint research projects (budget of $2M) between Maryland companies and faculty anywhere in the University System of Maryland. Award winning entrepreneurship programs through the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (www.mtech.umd.edu). The Maryland Pathogen research Institute (www.mpri.umd.edu) and Fischell Dept of BioEngineering (www.bioe.umd.edu) collaborate extensively with industry. The Sloan Center for Biotechnology provides research in biotech-related public policy. Total UM external funding: $400M, with approximately 25% in life sciences. UMBC: (University of Maryland Baltimore County, www.umbc.edu). Entrepreneurial campus with active incubator and research park (www.bwtechumbc.com). Award winning entrepreneurship program, ACTiVATE for training mid-career women entrepreneurs. There is a history of long standing expertise in biomanufacturing. The college has a good relationship with the Parenteral Drug Association, located in the research park. The college has recently begun degree programs in biotech regulatory affairs and biotech finance. Total external funding: approximately $50M. UMBI: (University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, www.umbi.umd.edu) UMBI is a research institute of the University System of Maryland. UMBI houses the c-GMP facility at its CARB location, providing manufacturing capabilities for process development and production of clinical grade materials. Has research expertise in medical biotechnology, agricultural biotech, marine biotechnology and ecobiology. Total external funding: approximately $50M. CCBC: The Community College of Baltimore County www.ccbcmd.edu, is a multi-campus institution offering both degree and non-degree programs. CCBC offers an AA degree program through the Department of Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing, and provides both public and contract training through the Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development, including courses in Introduction to cGMP and Asceptic Processing. CCBC is a member of, and host site of, the Baltimore County Bio/Pharma training partnership and is the regional headquarters for the Northeast Biomanufacturing Center. Johns Hopkins University: (www.jhu.edu): The Office of Technology Licensing has informally committed to joining the MDDDN and is expected to provide a comprehensive list of resources available to biotech companies available at JHU. Total external funding: $1.2 B in life sciences. Private companies: In Maryland, there are many contract research companies who provide research, development and manufacturing support on a contract basis. It is the intent to invite these private companies to join MDDDN as soon as practicable. A short list of 12 contract manufacturers has been developed, and these companies will be contacted when initial launch of MDDDN has been completed. |
