3-28-08 This short paper introduces a new UM initiative, the Maryland Drug Discovery and Development Network. The idea is that there are considerable resources in the UM System, JHU and private industry that would act to support drug discovery and development. Rationale: The rationale for development of this network is that there are many distributed resources, and it may be difficult for a bioscience company to access the right resources for their point in the drug discovery and development process. The Network: The Maryland Drug Discovery and Development Network is a consortium of resources in Maryland acting to facilitate collaborations between public and private sector resources available within the State of Maryland to encourage drug discovery and development. The network includes basic research, pre-clinical, clinical and regulatory support, manufacturing, workforce training and education and facilities, and is designed to provide assistance throughout the drug discovery and development cycle. Resources: The MDDDN is a compilation of such resources in 6 areas: pre-clinical, clinical, regulatory, manufacturing, workforce training, and facilities. A preliminary group, with 1 representative from each of four UM campuses, has already met and identified University System of Maryland resources. Before June 08, the MDDDN will have a web site that will be hosted at University of Maryland Baltimore. Marketing Tool: This consortium would act as an effective marketing tool for bioscience companies in Maryland wishing to access university resources or for other companies seeking to relocate to the region. Constituents: The MDDDN constituent pieces are scattered throughout the State of Maryland, and at the present time, the network is virtual, with a web site presence, and no independent financial support. Some marketing materials are being developed. It is expected that the network will need support for maintaining the web site and for any promotional activities. |
